DOSB boss Hrmann insists on forecast: billion damages for sports | message

BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Despite critical voices, DOSB President Alfons Hörmann continues to fear that the Corona crisis will damage the German sports market in the billions. “The damage is far greater than what can be seen in any form in applications or documentation,” said the head of the German Olympic Sports Federation on Thursday, the TV channel Sky. At the moment, only “the tip of the iceberg in the damage assessment is being discussed,” added Hörmann.

Most recently, Dagmar Freitag (SPD), the sports committee chairwoman of the Bundestag, described the DOSB’s damage expectation as “at least daring”. At the end of May, the DOSB had based its forecast on a survey by the auditing firm Deloitte and identified a financial need of more than one billion euros. Therefore, emergency aids for sports would have to be increased accordingly.

Hörmann praised the federal government for the recently announced aid package of 200 million euros. In addition, there would be support from all federal states as well as from the Bundeswehr and federal police. Nevertheless, he continues to be “intensely concerned,” said the DOSB president. Many member organizations “have reached a critical point by the end of the year at the latest”. Three quarters of the DOSB members are not sure whether their existence will be secured at the turn of the year if there is no return to competitive sports, if possible with spectators./hc/DP/he
