ROUNDUP: Vietnam wants to buy Russian vaccine ‘Sputnik V’ | message

HANOI (dpa-AFX) – Vietnam has registered to buy the Russian corona vaccine “Sputnik V”. The Southeast Asian country wants to buy 50 to 150 million vaccine doses for a large-scale campaign, reported the state newspaper “Tu? I Tr?” on Friday. In the meantime, they will continue to work on developing their own vaccine, reported the national television on Friday, citing the Ministry of Health in Hanoi.

The Russian President Wladimir Putin announced on Tuesday the approval of the vaccine “Sputnik V” for wide use in the population. It took place before the results of so-called phase III studies were available – a procedure that has triggered a lot of criticism internationally. Nevertheless, there are already those interested in the drug: The Brazilian state of Paraná has announced that it will conclude an agreement with Russia to produce the vaccine itself. The United Arab Emirates and Israel should also be interested.

Vietnam has long been considered successful in the fight against the corona pandemic and has been repeatedly praised by the World Health Organization. After months without new local infections, there was a new outbreak in the coastal city of Da Nang in late July. Since then, the number of new infections has risen rapidly and the country has recorded its first Covid-19-related deaths. On Friday, the number of confirmed cases was 911, 21 people have died./ch/bp/cfn/DP/mis
