Just over 24 hours have passed after the massive attack on Twitter users yesterday. In which, a group of scammers tried to use accounts of important personalities inside and outside the crypto market, to obtain Bitcoins. However, despite having used users from people like Joe Biden, Changpeng Zhao and Elon Musk, Twitter scammers only got 13 Bitcoin in total, as mentioned by Emi Melker in the Tweet of the day:
Attack Twitter for 13 Bitcoins
It is difficult to compare the attack carried out against Twitter yesterday, with some other event that occurred in recent years. And, the massive account hacking suffered by the social network has been one of the worst cybersecurity gaps to date. Leading to dozens of accounts of great personalities from business and politics being hacked.
Now, perhaps precisely the mass of this attack was what made it so ineffective. Well, by using the accounts of people like presidential candidate Joe Biden, or Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Hackers immediately set off alarms for the crypto community. Who turned a deaf ear to the hackers’ proposal to duplicate all Bitcoins sent to a specific address.
Thanks to this, the end result of the attack has been quite disappointing in monetary terms for attackers. Well, by reviewing the operations carried out in the direction of Bitcoin that they used to scam users of the crypto world. We can note that it only received the amount of 12.86 Bitcoin, equivalent to about $ 117,000. Which led Scott Melker’s wife, Emi Melker, to question whether this whole operation was worth it:
“Hackers have only gotten 13 BTC so far, was all this worth it?”
And it is that, although the damage caused to Twitter will probably end up costing the company several million dollars. In the end, the scammers’ monetary gains have been minimal. Especially considering all the attention they’ve drawn to themselves, and that is sure to lead the American police forces to pursue them.
