In the top game of the Bundesliga, BVB won with 2-0 (1-0) in the Saxons on Saturday and made a sign three days after the embarrassing defeat against Mainz. Thanks to the defeat by Leverkusen in Berlin, Leipzig is almost certainly qualified for the premier class due to the clearly better goal difference.
Ironically, Erling Haaland (30th) put Dortmund in the lead. The Norwegian was also a hot candidate in Leipzig in winter, had a look at the training center personally. In the end, however, the 19-year-old chose Borussia. After a Brandt pass, Haaland pushed the ball over the line again in added time.
Before the kick-off, Leipzig said goodbye to its most valuable employee. Timo Werner, who switched to Chelsea after the end of the season for 53 million euros, posed with CEO Oliver Mintzlaff and sports director Markus Krösche for a quick photo, and also received a collage of his time in Leipzig.
The encounter against BVB was not a lasting memory at first. The guests had the game under control after a good ten minutes, had the ball circulate strongly and had good opportunities through Haaland (10th) and Thorgan Hazard (13th). Haaland (15th) shot directly at RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi after a wonderful pass from Hazard. The Hungarian international was also there a minute later at the next Haaland attempt.
Then RB was very lucky. Forward Patrik Schick fouled Axel Witsel at the center line from behind and had no chance of the ball. However, referee Felix Zwayer left it with a yellow card. As a result, Dortmund let the Leipzigers come – and RB fell into the counter-trap. Julian Brandt initiated the attack on the right side, the 17-year-old Giovanni Reyna forwarded and Haaland turned ice cold to the lead.
The next shock for RB just before half-time. Captain Marcel Sabitzer had to get out with a knee injury, the Austrian limped straight into the cabin after 39 minutes. And Werner? A minute later he had his first good chance from an acute angle, but BVB goalkeeper Roman Bürki saved with the tip of his foot.
Julian Nagelsmann reacted at half time. With Tyler Adams, he strengthened the midfield headquarters, in the defense became a three- to a four-chain. However, the immediate effect failed to materialize. Haaland (47.) released Mateu Morey, but he missed the good chance of a second goal from a good ten meters and pushed the ball past. Leipzig offensively found no means, BVB had Haaland. But the crossbar prevented the attacker’s second goal (52nd)
After 70 minutes, Werner’s last home appearance in Leipzig was over. Nagelsmann took the hapless attacker down, bringing in Christopher Nkunku. This helped Leipzig’s creativity only to a limited extent, until the end there was hardly any remedy for the Dortmund defense. The best RB chance of Angelino (85.) in the more powerful final phase prevented Bürki again before Haaland (90. + 3) made the double pack perfect.
