BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The number of oldtimers with H registration plates registered in Germany has exceeded the half a million mark for the first time. As of January 1, 2020, 525 968 such cars were registered, which are at least 30 years old, as the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) announced on Thursday in Berlin. A year earlier, there were 474,516, which corresponds to an increase of 11 percent. The number of classic cars has grown significantly in recent years, but their share of the total number of cars is only around 1 percent.
More than two thirds (353 369) of the cars with H license plates in Germany come from German manufacturers. This is followed by vintage cars from the United States, England and Italy, which each account for less than a tenth each.
With 39,758 copies, the VW (Volkswagen (VW) vz) Beetle is the most common classic car. Mercedes-Benz is number one in terms of brands (127 112). This is followed by Volkswagen (Volkswagen (VW) vz) (101 197), Porsche (34 975), BMW (25 831) and Opel (24 069 cars). According to the current evaluation by the VDA and BBE Automotive GmbH based on figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), the stock of all historic vehicles, including motorcycles and commercial vehicles, rose by 11 percent to 595 046 units./ah/DP/fba
