DUBLIN (dpa-AFX) – Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has called on the EU and Great Britain to make progress in the negotiations on a trade pact. “There has to be movement so that the negotiations can go into the final phase,” said Martin on Thursday at a meeting with EU Council President Charles Michel in Dublin. Michel demanded again that Great Britain must now “put all cards on the table” and restore confidence. The EU wants a deal – but not at any price.
As time runs out, the UK and EU are currently still vying for a trade pact for the post-Brexit transition period. This is to prevent tariffs, traffic jams and other trade barriers. So far the negotiations have stalled. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson increased tensions with a controversial law for its own domestic market. / Swe / DP / fba
