Amazon launched its Prime membership program in 2005, when Walmart made even higher profits than Amazon generated revenue. But 15 years later, Amazon has run away from its biggest competitor in online retail.

According to eMarketer’s figures, Amazon is now responsible for around 40 percent of online retail sales in America. Walmart is in second place, but only has around five percent in this segment. These numbers could have urged Walmart to start a program similar to Amazon.

A Walmart spokesman confirmed the membership offer to Tom’s Guide, but did not disclose any further details. As the website now writes, Walmart’s service is said to cost $ 98 a year and offer same-day deliveries, fuel discounts, and other perks.

As Amazon recently announced, around 150 million Prime subscribers pay $ 119 a year. In addition to express delivery and the streaming offer, this also includes deliveries on the same day and early access to offers. There are also a number of other Prime benefits, such as access to Amazon Music or the gaming platform Twitch.

Walmart could score here with a cheaper price, and earlier access to individual products could also appeal to customers.

Is Walmart Plus late?

While Walmart has a market cap of around $ 366.8 billion, Amazon is worth an unbelievable $ 1.55 trillion. Amazon Prime has a large share in the value of the largest online retailer in the world.

Many families in the United States now have Amazon’s paid service, and this development has been going on for several years. In the meantime, Amazon is also trying to appeal to former Walmart customers with a lower income. So it could be that Walmart is late with its premium service because most Americans are already on Amazon’s side.
