Northern Ireland tightened corona measures: pubs temporarily closed | message

BELFAST (dpa-AFX) – In the British part of Northern Ireland, the corona measures are being tightened significantly. All pubs and restaurants will be closed for four weeks. The schools will be closed for two weeks. The virus spread must be slowed down, said the Northern Irish Prime Minister Arlene Foster on Wednesday in Belfast. There are particularly many infections in the city of Derry and the surrounding area, where many people live on the border with the EU state Ireland.

Other regions in the UK are also badly affected by the pandemic: the north of England, Scotland and parts of Wales. Every part of the country in Great Britain with a total of almost 67 million inhabitants decides on its own measures in the Corona crisis.

In England, a three-tier system has been in effect since Wednesday, which classifies the measures according to the degree of risk – medium, high or very high. Prime Minister Boris Johnson wanted to standardize the criteria. However, critics describe his approach as inadequate. The Sage scientific advisory body recommended a nationwide lockdown to the government weeks ago.

The head of government of Wales, Mark Drakeford, announced strict measures: People should no longer be allowed to come to the part of Wales from British areas with high numbers of infections. He also sharply criticized Prime Minister Johnson, who does not cooperate in the Corona crisis and does not respond to inquiries.

Almost 20,000 people in Great Britain were verifiably infected with the corona virus within 24 hours, as the authorities announced on Wednesday. 137 people have died from Covid 19 disease. Experts anticipate a high number of unreported cases among new infections because there are not enough tests in the country./si/DP/he
