WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – US President Donald Trump has returned to the White House after three days of hospital treatment for his Covid disease. Trump staged his arrival as a show of strength: he climbed the stairs to the balcony on the south side of his residence, took off the face mask and saluted the pilot of his departing helicopter. Trump is still likely to be contagious and, according to health authorities’ requirements, would have to wear the mask to protect people around him. On TV pictures from Monday evening (local time) it was not possible to see that he had put the mask back on when he entered the White House.
The US president had been discharged from Walter Reed Hospital in a suburb of Washington a few minutes earlier. His personal physician Sean Conley restricted the fact that Trump was “not yet over the mountain”. At the same time, however, he emphasized that the President in the White House would get the best medical care around the clock. “I feel really good!” Wrote the president on Twitter. He was flown to the hospital by helicopter on Friday evening.
Conley said at a press conference in front of the hospital in the afternoon that he would probably not be able to give the all-clear for the course of the disease until next week. “If we get through the weekend by Monday and his condition stays the same or improves, then we can all finally breathe a sigh of relief,” said Conley. But there is nothing that would speak against a dismissal.
The US presidential election is four weeks from now. Trump announced on Monday evening on Twitter that he would soon resume his election campaign, which had been suspended due to the illness.
The election year is overshadowed by the corona pandemic. Trump, who wants to secure his second term in office on November 3, is accused of serious failures in dealing with the pandemic because of the many deaths in the United States. In the past few weeks he has campaigned with thousands of supporters. Trump’s disease again highlighted the pandemic on the home stretch for the election.
Now the President wrote: “Do not be afraid of Covid.” You shouldn’t allow the corona virus to dominate your own life. “We developed some really great drugs and knowledge under the Trump administration. I feel better than 20 years ago!” Trump had been treated in the hospital with an experimental antibody drug and steroids, among other things.
Since the beginning of the global crisis, more than 7.4 million corona infections have been detected in the USA, and more than 210,000 people have died after being infected. The pandemic is still not under control. Even the White House is grappling with an outbreak the scope of which is only gradually becoming clearer. Several people from Trump’s environment have become infected, including the first lady, Trump’s campaign manager and one of his closest advisers. His spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany announced her infection on Monday.
