GENEVA (dpa-AFX) – The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of carelessness in the fight against the virus in view of the sharp rise in the number of corona infections. “The number of reported Covid-19 cases in Europe was three times higher in the past week than at the first peak in March,” said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday in Geneva. “Even though the death toll has been lower, hospital admissions are increasing and many cities are reporting that their intensive care units will be near capacity in the coming weeks.”
Tedros and the WHO experts appealed to people to take the measures seriously. “We have to persevere,” said Covid expert Maria von Kerkhove. “We’re going to get through this and we’re going to get this under control.”
If a flu wave comes at the same time, health systems quickly reach their limits, it was said. The flu expert Sylvie Briand reminded us that the flu season in the southern hemisphere was unusually mild this year.
